Year in, year out, our Merricks vineyard is arguably our most consistent performer. Tucked away in a small, protected pocket in Merricks North and planted solely to Pinot Noir, this vineyard is known for producing sensuous wines rich in blue fruits with velvet-like tannins. Dark cherry, fruits of the forrest, plum pudding, with inky notes juxtaposed against some delicate florals. The tannins are supremely fine; silk-like.

Clone MV6, elevation 55m; 21 days on skins in open fermenters, matured for 9 months in French puncheons (33% new). By some distance, the deepest colour of the quartet in this tasting, and the most powerful, with savoury, foresty texture and structure. The MV6 plum leads the expansive fruit palette, backed up by firm but balanced tannins. Will live long.

Merricks Vineyard at 55m above sea level and 3km from Westernport Bay is a special site for Pinot Noir. The maritime climate has a moderating effect on the extremes of temperature and that means lower daily highs and higher daily lows. Tucked away in a small, protected pocket in Merricks North and planted solely to Pinot Noir with a mix of clones. Winemaking: The fruit was hand harvested and diligently sorted before destemming into 2 tonne open fermenters for a 7-day cold soak before the onset of wild fermentation. Ferment temperatures peaked at 32 degrees Celsius. A post ferment maceration of 6 days followed before pressing. The wine was lightly racked to French oak puncheons (33% new) for natural malolactic fermentation and 11 months maturation. | |
