While Grenache is not a regular part of the Montalto portfolio, in 2022 Chief Winemaker Simon Black took the opportunity to create something truly distinctive. Following successive low-yielding vintages on the Mornington Peninsula, Simon sourced a parcel of outstanding Grenache fruit from Heathcote, one of Victoria’s premier warm-climate regions. The result was a one-off, small-batch release - juicy, aromatic and perfectly suited to summer barbecues.
Montalto Grenache 2022 showed all the hallmarks of Heathcote’s warmer climate, balanced with Montalto’s signature winemaking precision:
· Fruit spectrum - vibrant red fruits, raspberry, cherry and pomegranate.
· Savoury nuance - spice, subtle earth and a gentle herbal lift.
· Texture - medium-bodied, juicy and aromatic, with soft tannins and bright acidity.
It was crafted as a wine to enjoy in its youth - generous, approachable and food-friendly.
Montalto Grenache 2022
Made from Heathcote-grown Grenache during a warm vintage, this limited release embraced the variety’s natural brightness and spice. A wine designed for the table, it proved an ideal companion for summer dishes and outdoor dining. While this may remain a singular experiment, it showcased Simon Black’s willingness to explore beyond the Peninsula when the right opportunity arises.
Grenache’s juicy, aromatic style makes it a natural match for:
· Barbecued lamb cutlets or pork ribs.
· Chargrilled seasonal vegetables.
· Mediterranean-inspired dishes with tomato, olive and herbs.
Serve lightly chilled at 14 - 16°C to accentuate freshness.
Grenache at Montalto began almost by chance - a response to consecutive low-yielding vintages on the Peninsula. Rather than compromise the range, Simon Black broadened the horizon, sourcing fruit from Heathcote and producing a wine that quickly won favour for its generosity and charm. While unlikely to be repeated, the 2022 Grenache remains a fascinating chapter in Montalto’s winemaking journey.
