Savagnin is a versatile white grape varietal primarily grown in the Jura region of France. It can be blended to make a range of wine styles from bone dry to exceptionally sweet. Savagnin is famed for its distinct flavours and aromas, which often include nuances of nut, citrus, and exotic spices.
Harvested from one acre of Savagnin grapes planted in our red clay soils at Red Hill South, our Savagnin started out as an enigma, having been originally planted as what we thought was Albariño. Following a set of tests carried out on the vines, the fruit was discovered to be Savagnin, an error upon importation having led to the confusion. Upon further exploration, our Savagnin only became more enigmatic, appearing to have been cut from the vines of a vineyard in Spain. So, we went to work, creating a unique wine-making process directly serving our mysterious vine.
When constructing our particular interpretation of Savagnin, we perfected our vinification techniques to complement the individual qualities of the vine in a style that reflected the Red Hill South vineyard in which it was planted. Situated 3km from Westernport Bay, the cool and wet attributes of the vineyard deliver particularly fertile soils, meaning that the vines exhibit more vigour and demand prudent management. Our Savagnin vines sit on a northerly slope, ideal for releasing the delicate flavours and aromas attributed to the variety.
Our Mornington Peninsula Savagnins are known for their distinctive blend of aromatic freshness and refreshing acidity by blending a medley of notes such as white florals, lemon blossom, lemon juice, slate and wet stone with intricate nuances of sea spray and pepper, forming flavours which are alluring and distinctive.
