A type of red wine grape varietal primarily grown in Spain, Tempranillo is the most commonly planted grape variety in the country and is frequently coaxed to create some of the region’s most famous wines. The grapes are renowned for delivering wines with medium to full body, moderate acidity and dominantly sweet fruit flavours such as dark berries and plums. Tempranillo wines are often aged in oak barrels, which adds additional complexity and depth to the wine, with nuances such as leather, tobacco, and vanilla, demonstrating customs and techniques unique to Spanish winemaking.
The fruit for Montalto’s Tempranillo is hand-picked from Merricks North, a vineyard typically warmer than our other sites located across the peninsula. The more generous temperatures allow the site to produce particularly fleshy fruit, structured and aromatically intense, with distinctly pure fragrances. Bearing an intense crimson hue, Montalto’s Tempranillos exhibit a generous mouthfeel, intertwining flavours such as strawberry compote with blood plum and black cherry. The palate delves deep into taste, offering hints of chocolate and spice accompanied by rustic, earthy nuances such as pumice stone and ferrous, creating a more profound complexity.
