November is here, the estate is looking magnificent and we’re buzzing! Don’t forget that it’s Melbourne Cup long weekend this weekend - bookings are available in both The Piazza and The Restaurant. Keep an eye out for our Christmas gifting bundles which we’re releasing in a few weeks. A quick reminder: we’re closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day so plan ahead if you’re dropping in this summer!
Cheers,
We’ve been thrilled to achieve some incredible results lately – here’s a few of our most highly awarded wines:
"The perfect lunch wine, with its fine tannins, acidity and flavour coming together as a light expression. A neat combo of pepper and forest floor aromas, baking spices, poached rhubarb and red cherries with a touch of celery.”
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion.
'The colour is outrageous – a vibrant black purple shot with ruby. Heady aromas come in next all floral and spicy with a touch of meaty reduction and wood smoke with some nori, too. While it snaps, crackles and pops with juicy, tangy fruit, this is savoury – a big part of its appeal. Some licorice infuses the black plums, the tannins ripe, slightly gritty and textural covering the mid-weighted palate with ease. Syrah made by a pinot noir specialist. Nice one." - Score 96/100.
Jane Faulkner, 2025 Halliday Wine Companion
"This Tuerong is probably the most generous of the Montalto Single Vineyard Pinots. The Merricks is all things savoury, North One is pretty and this is muscular and measured not to mention that there are some Central Otago vibes going on here... It's long, persistent and moreish. I could get awfully comfortable here. Excellent stuff.” - Score 95/100.

“I was lucky to be selected as an Australian delegate to represent Montalto at Slow Food Terra Madre in Turin, Italy this year!
Terra Madre (Mother Earth in Italian) is a large sustainable food producers conference held in Turin every two years. This year was the 20th anniversary of Slow Food Terra Madre and the largest so far. With over 120 countries and over 3,000 delegates, it's an opportunity for small scale food producers from around the world to gather together and discuss issues we all face, despite the vast differences in our cultures, economies and topographies. Joining farmers, produce growers, cheesemakers, winemakers, olive oil producers, meat producers etc. are academics, cooks, students and educators from around the world. Terra Madre is more than just a five-day event, it's a rich global network established by attendees, and a means to learn from each other, sharing knowledge and ideas.
I met so many amazing people from around the world, listened to inspiring speakers and ate my way around the globe of artisan producers of cheese, salami, preserves and dishes from their countries. We all share many of the same issues, but also shared stories of hope for the future of small-scale farming. I made lifelong connections with small produce growers, seed savers and educators from all over the world and am excited for the future of what I do here at Montalto.”

“Broad beans are now in abundance in the garden – an absolute favourite with the kitchen teams. In The Restaurant, they are mixed with preserved Meyer lemon and fresh mint, and then dressed with bay leaf infused oil. The dish is served with house made tortellini which is cooked in a rich sauce made from pecorino, butter and lots of black pepper. The estate-grown beans are then placed on top and finished with the leaves and flowers from the broad beans.”
Adam Johnston, Head Chef

“As the season warms up, our tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants are starting to put on new growth. Crates of beautiful heirloom salad mix, radishes and baby carrots are harvested daily for The Restaurant and The Piazza. Our raspberry canes are starting to produce fruit and are alive with bees visiting their flowers.
Lush new growth on our orchard trees offers shade for our chickens and we are getting around 20 eggs per day again. Blink and you can see the produce growing before your eyes as spring rains and warm days speed up the growth on all our gardens!”
