Leaving the wineries of the Yarra Valley after 15 years for a sea change to the Peninsula, Glen arrived at Montalto in April 2017 with decades of hospitality experience under his belt, as well as a deep love for all things Australian wine. Glen’s multifaceted role sees him working to ensure the smooth running of The Piazza at Montalto, along with Tucks (located right next door). When he’s not carefully overseeing customer experience, whilst closely managing his ever-growing team, Glen works to ensure the grounds across the estate are kept picture perfect at all times. Just as at home working through busy service periods in The Piazza as he is on a ride-on mower, Glen’s keen eye for detail sees his dedication for perfection reflected in everything he does. When he’s not at Montalto, Glen likes to walk. And we’re not talking a casual stroll either. Glen has completed the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker, as well as the Kokoda Track, with more grand plans underway for the future.
My ideal day at Montalto is a beautiful spring day which starts with an early morning walk around the estate to ensure everything looks pristine before we welcome visitors. This includes careful inspection of the Sculpture Trail, picnic sites and our stunning kitchen gardens. Spring is also when the vines are starting to show signs of life after the long winter months – those first small glimpses of green are such a welcome sight when seating guests in The Piazza on sun-drenched tables. We also fine tune all of our plans and operating systems throughout spring ahead of summer which always leads to such excitement for the team.
If I could drink any of our amazing wines forever, I would be enjoying our 2014 Single Vineyard “Tuerong” Pinot Noir. I absolutely love the savoury finish of this wine.
My favourite season for in the estate gardens is definitely autumn. I love the abundancy of different varietals of pumpkins that come in all shapes and sizes.
Montalto operates completely on tank water. Our beautiful Wine Room is built on top of one of our rainwater tanks, whilst the lawn at the entrance to The Piazza conceals another tank.
My favourite place on the Peninsula, other than all of the great hospitality venues, is the beach just near where I live: Fossil Beach, Mornington. It’s a bit of a hike down the stairs but once there, you are nearly always the only one there. An absolute favourite of our dog Jessie (Aussie Bulldog) to enjoy a run around. Glen works Friday - Tuesday so if you’re visiting during the week, definitely say hello!
