“Classically red-fruited, raspberry, cherry, and cranberry combine with blood orange, rose petal, spice, earth, pink peppercorn, fresh herbs, forest floor, and some oak-inspired coffee grind notes, making for a wonderfully aromatic and complex aroma profile. A core of quenching juicy red fruit gives way to a savoury line showing just a subtle character of cured meat or charcuterie. There’s minerality in this wine too and a fine polished tannin, which carries the length of the palate. Moreish acidity gives purpose, brightness, and a long expressive finish."
Chief Winemaker, Simon Black.
“A single vineyard wine made from our home vineyard in Red Hill South. Comprised of 59% North Face block (clone P58) and 41% South Face block (clone I10V1). Our Estate Chardonnay is built on a core of citrus fruit together stone fruits of nectarine and white peach. After some challenging weather events in late spring, impacting yields, the weather Gods provided perfect conditions leading into harvest. Slate and flint, lemon curd, crème brulee, lime splice, roasted hazelnuts, white florals, a lick of sulphides all chime in to play their part. The influence of spicy French oak compliments the generous fruit profile which is tied together with bright and energetic naturally acidity and a textural, creamy finish.”
Chief Winemaker, Simon Black.
“A compelling wine that balances a powerful structure with polish, brightness and finesse. The presence of this wine is immediately evident through the deep crimson colour with purple hues. The complex nose shows red and black cherry, blood orange chinotto and cherry cola combining with earthy notes, bramble and tea leaf. On the palate the wine is sweet fruited up front full of cherry flesh, raspberry and blood orange. The fruit then quickly makes way for a textural and savoury wine, the assertive tannin from the whole bunch component in perfect balance with the velvet quality of the silky skin tannin. A wine as much about feel as it is about flavour.”
Chief Winemaker, Simon Black.
“The scarcity of the Pennon Hill wines in 2023 is matched only by their quality. The low yields, and mild and extended ripening period has resulted in concentration, intense flavour, and beautiful perfume. These wines won’t meet the demand, so be sure to get in quick.”
For 23 years, we’ve welcomed families of all shapes, sizes and configurations to celebrate the mum in their lives at Montalto. This year is no different.
We’re delighted to invite everyone to enjoy a moment out of the ordinary with their most extraordinary mum!
“May is our foraging season and we have started to harvest wild mushrooms.
Slippery Jack mushrooms are soon followed by beautiful pine mushrooms or saffron milk caps that will feature on our menus. Our figs are ripening fast and it’s a daily harvest from our 20+ year old trees.
Our soil still has some warmth so our brassicas are putting on more growth and our delicate crops of salad mix, herbs, baby carrots and radishes move into our polytunnels.
I’m ready to embrace the colder and slower months.”
Julie Bennett, Produce Manager
It took it’s time this year, but autumn is finally here on the estate. The cool, crisp days outside make for warm and cosy times in The Restaurant as the open fire in the kitchen comes into its own. The view from every table in The Restaurant is spectacular – the vines all shades of earthy greens and golds.
Julie’s beautiful estate-grown produce will be hitting the wood-fire grill and will be served alongside slow cooked braises. With the promise of truffles already in the air, we hunt local pine mushrooms in the meantime.
From May – September, The Restaurant is open from Friday – Sunday for lunch. From Saturday 1st June, The Restaurant is also open for Winter Twilight Dinner bookings from 5.30pm.
Gauthier Georgelet, Manager
The colours of autumn are best enjoyed from The Garden Room in The Piazza. Looking over Wendy’s Garden and out across the vines is truly spectacular at this time of year.
Autumn harvests from our estate gardens feature throughout our menu - especially Jerusalem artichokes and foraged pine mushrooms. Look out for:
Pine mushroom, gorgonzola, vincotto and rosemary pizza
and
Jerusalem artichoke gratin with a rich and cheesy taleggio sauce.
Both dishes are a delicious showcase of produce grown right here at Montalto.
