SEPTEMBER AT MONTALTO 2024

“First and foremost, a very Happy Father’s Day to everyone celebrating today! We look forward to seeing some of you today in The Restaurant, The Piazza, The Cellar Door and those lucky enough to secure one of our stunning Father’s Day picnics. Don’t forget you can still shop our Father’s Day wine and pantry packs via our website – it’s never too late to spoil the dad in your life!

Spring is here and with school holidays and the Grand Final public holiday at the end of the month, there’s plenty of opportunities to visit and enjoy a glass of chardonnay or two - or even a glass of bubbles in celebration of our wine team’s incredible results in the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion! Our biggest congratulations to Simon Black, Dan Prior and their teams."

Cheers,

We’re thrilled to share that 10 Montalto wines have achieved 95 points and above in this year’s Halliday Wine Companion!

“Scores of 95 and above for 10 of our wines in the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion reflect the commitment of our vineyard and winery teams led by Simon Black (Chief Winemaker / General Manager – Wine) and Dan Prior (Vineyard Manager). In Halliday scoring, that’s an impressive 10 Gold Medals! These results, with fruit from our 6 Peninsula-wide vineyard sites, builds on our history of consistency and cutting-edge winemaking. As a team, we will continue on this journey.”

“Quartz colour with green hues with a core of ripe grapefruit, white nectarine, and a hint of citrus zing. There are also some white florals here in the Star Jasmine realm complemented by a little talc and a savory hint of chicken stock on the finish. This is a wine of breadth, weight and generosity. Whilst it’s a chardonnay in the classic Montalto style, the phenolic framework sets this wine apart from its stablemate ‘The Eleven’.”
Simon Black, Chief Winemaker

“This is of those wines you pour, sip and think, ah that’s good. Very good indeed. Flavours ebb and flow between citrus and ripe white peach with wafts of ginger flower and a delicious lemon saline character. It feels rich and voluptuous as the palate builds with the right amount of texture with a smidge of lees and spicy oak. Not too big so it remains stylish and spot-on.”

“A classic example Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. There’s the quintessential red fruits of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry, though here they are just teetering towards a darker blue profile. This generous fruit is balanced by savory characters of ink, parsnip and turnip, thanks to the whole bunch inclusion. The finish reveals a distinct regional characteristic with a hint of Campari, reminiscent of subtly charred orange peel. This wine doesn’t try to revolutionize Pinot Noir; instead, it confidently embodies the traditional essence of the variety.”
Simon Black, Chief Winemaker

“While most fruit is destemmed, 30% undergoes carbonic maceration for two weeks, which gives a poppy, perfume lift to this terrific, lighter-framed wine. So fragrant and pretty with roses, wild alpine strawberries and a certain exotic waft a bit like Turkish delight. The palate is laced with delicate flavours, some of the aforementioned, plus red cherries and woodsy spices. While tannins are fine and light, acidity leads this vintage, rendering this a delightful drink on its own and better in the short-term.”

“2022 was a wonderful vintage for Syrah. Blueberries, Kirsch, and blackberry meld with a medley of fresh spices including star anise, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. A playful wet-stone minerality adds further interest alongside some citrus and olive tapenade aromas. On the palate, generous dark cherry fruit fuses with bitter dark chocolate. The palate is seamless with chalk-like tannins and a cooling acid line giving the impression of reserved power.”
Simon Black, Chief Winemaker

“Tuerong is a warmer site on the peninsula, yet this shows a coolness as it’s neither weighty nor jammy. It’s refined, detailed and superfine. Everything is in balance – the fruit, the oak, the textural, raw-silk tannins and the uplifting acidity; it just tastes so good. The finest syrah on the peninsula hands down.”
Jane Faulkner, 2025 Halliday Wine Companion

"Spring is my favourite season as it’s the time for growth and the promise of harvests to come.

Crisp mornings make way for warm days and sunshine as I start sowing my summer crops. Tomatoes (all 48 varieties!) are growing strong in our greenhouse and will be offered for sale in The Piazza in a month or two’s time, with proceeds donated to charity.

Soil warms, our chooks begin to lay again and our orchard is alive with blossoms and bees from our hives. Happy Spring!"

Julie Bennett, Produce Manager
