CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL PINOT NOIR DAY AT MONTALTO

There’s no grape quite like Pinot Noir. Elegant yet complex, delicate yet profound, it’s a variety that truly reflects its place and its maker. At Montalto on the Mornington Peninsula, Pinot Noir isn’t just one of our passions - it’s a signature of who we are.

This International Pinot Noir Day on 18th August, we’re celebrating with a very special offer: 20% off all our Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs for 3 days only, from Friday 15th – Monday 18th August, both online and via The Cellar Door. It’s the perfect chance to explore the unique personalities of our three acclaimed sites - Tuerong, Red Hill, and Merricks - each brought to life by the careful hand of Chief Winemaker Simon Black.

Each of these Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs is a true expression of site, shaped not just by soil and aspect, but also by elevation - from the lower-lying Tuerong at 30 metres, to Merricks at 55 metres, and rising up to North One at 110 metres. These subtle differences in altitude influence everything from ripening speed to flavour concentration, giving each wine its own distinctive personality.

The Tuerong vineyard sits in the north of Red Hill, and this Pinot Noir is all about vibrancy and drive. It has already caught the eye of critics, winning Best Regional Pinot Noir (2024 Australian Pinot Noir Challenge) and a Gold Medal, 95 Points (2024 Australian Pinot Noir Challenge).

Simon Black describes it as offering “a plethora of aromas including bramble, Ink, cola, sarsaparilla, beets, parsnips, charcuterie, earth and a waft of cinnamon stick. On the palate, polished supple mulberry and blackberry fruits combine with spice, earthiness and mouth-coating chalky tannins on a long savoury finish. It’s a wine that invites you to revisit it again and again to contemplate its evolution over time."

From Kim Watts, our Cellar Door Manager: “Tuerong is our warmest site and it shows – this is a richer, more full-bodied Pinot. Think cherry, damson plum and hints of juniper and Chinese five spice. Rich tannins and depth make this a great food wine with serious personality.”

If you’re looking for a Pinot that’s lively yet elegant, the Tuerong is your perfect pour.

A little further south, our estate site in Red Hill yields a Pinot Noir that’s plush and beautifully textured. It was awarded a Gold Medal, 95 Points (Halliday Wine Companion), highlighting its exceptional quality.

Simon says this wine is “A classic example Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. Quintessential red fruits including wild strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, and cherry all tied together with some crushed fresh herbs, liquorice, rose petal and negroni. On the palate, the red fruit theme continues, with sour cherry, red currant, raspberry. The depth of fruit and powder-fine tannins are ingrained in the layered and savoury finish.”

Kim shares “Made from the oldest Pinot vines on the estate (planted in 1985), this wine has a vibrant cherry cola aroma and a savoury edge thanks to the iron-rich soil. You might even catch a hint of sea spray in there. On the palate, it’s bright, fresh and full of red fruits like cherry and red currant.”

Perfect for those who love a Pinot Noir that’s generous and complete, it’s a wonderful companion to your next roast duck or mushroom risotto.

Merricks is classic cool-climate Pinot country - it’s a stunning expression of site.

"The Merricks Pinot Noir boasts a rich ruby red colour and purple hues. It opens with sweet mulberry fruit, maraschino cherry and Black Forest cake with some blood orange and blood plum fruit in support. The incorporation of whole bunch tempers the juiciness, creating a savoury line that compliments the plush structural tannins." says Simon Black.

Kim adds “With its lower elevation, Merricks leans into sweeter fruit characters – think candied cherry, orange and a gentle spice from partial whole bunch fermentation. It’s generous on the palate with plush dark fruit notes of black cherry and blueberry, balanced by savoury herbs. Very easy to enjoy.”

It’s a Pinot that pairs beautifully with everything from grilled salmon to earthy vegetable dishes, and truly shines with a little time in the glass.
