We’re thrilled to announce 2 major wins at last night’s Australian Pinot Noir Challenge presentation:
Best Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir Trophy – 2023 Single Vineyard Tuerong Pinot Noir
Gold Medal – 2023 Pennon Hill Pinot Noir
“Winning the Best Mornington Pinot Noir Trophy at last year's Australian Pinot Noir Challenge was a thrilling achievement but clinching it two years consecutively is truly extraordinary. This year, our 2023 Tuerong Pinot Noir proudly claims the title. Additionally, the gold medal awarded to our 2023 Pennon Hill Pinot Noir further underscores the consistent high quality found across our entire wine selection, with this wine continually punching above its weight. As always, kudos to the vineyard and winery teams.”
The Australian Pinot Noir Challenge seeks to benchmark the best of Australia’s Pinot Noir regions and Pinot Noir wines each year to assess the quality regional variation and themes emerging from winemaking and regional expressions.
Pinot Noir is the 4th most crushed red wine variety in Australia and is one of the fastest growing drink categories in the market. This makes the Australian Pinot Noir Challenge ever more important as a guide to Pinot Noir consumers and winemakers.
"The charm of the Tuerong Pinot Noir begins with its complex nose. A plethora of aromas including bramble, Ink, cola, sarsaparilla, beets, parsnips, charcuterie, earth and a waft of cinnamon stick. On the palate, polished supple mulberry and blackberry fruits combine with spice, earthiness and mouth-coating chalky tannins on a long savoury finish. It’s a wine that invites you to revisit it again and again to contemplate its evolution over time."
Simon Black, Chief Winemaker
"This Tuerong is probably the most generous of the Montalto Single Vineyard Pinots. The Merricks is all things savoury, North One is pretty and this is muscular and measured not to mention that there are some Central Otago vibes going on here... It's long, persistent and moreish. I could get awfully comfortable here. Excellent stuff.” Score 95/100.
Steve Leszczynski, Qwine
"A classically vibrant and moreish Pennon Hill Pinot Noir. Fruit for the 2023 release comes from our elevated Red Hill vineyards (35%) and our warmer Tuerong sites (65%) at the northern end of the Peninsula. Lively aromas of cherry liqueur, milk chocolate, orange blossom and sage suggest a wine that’s both eminently drinkable yet complex. On the palate there’s bucket loads of red fruits in the form of ripe red cherry plus chinotto and classic Mornington Campari. Fresh acidity across the mid palate enhances the sense of life and vibrancy before an array of spice and structural tannin take over for a long savoury finish. A wine of energy, presence, freshness and weight. An outstanding example of Pennon Hill Pinot Noir."
Simon Black, Chief Winemaker
"The perfect lunch wine, with its fine tannins, acidity and flavour coming together as a light expression. A neat combo of pepper and forest floor aromas, baking spices, poached rhubarb and red cherries with a touch of celery.”
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
