We’re thrilled to announce a very special exhibition: Maquette, featuring works from icons Geoffrey Bartlett and Phillip Doggett-Williams.
Maquettes are scale models, typically created by the artist to visualise form and ideas. Whilst works of art in their own right, their final aesthetic seeks additional life in the monumental. The maquettes from Phillip Doggett-Williams and Geoffrey Bartlett, exclusively released for this breathtaking exhibition at Montalto, have an intimate beauty and intrigue - they have the hand crafted touch of the artist, conveying the first realisation of an idea.
“We are delighted to be able to pair these two artists work together at Montalto.
Phil has been involved with Montalto for many years, providing an artist point of view on the judging panel for the Montalto Sculpture Prize since it started. His two works ’Angel’ and ’No Climate for Change’ are much loved pieces in the Montalto Permanent Collection.
Geoffrey is one of Australia’s most well-known sculptors. His work ’The Messenger’ stood outside the NGV in Melbourne for many years, one of many public sculpture commissions.
Interestingly both these artists graduated at a similar time in the 1970’s from RMIT Fine Arts.
In this intimate exhibition of large ‘maquettes’, it is fascinating to explore up close the hand built touches, and exquisite details!” Neil Williams, Creative Director – Sculpture.
Maquette is a free exhibition, open to all visitors to Montalto, from Sunday 24th November 2024 – Monday 27th January 2025.
Join us on the lawn in front of The Restaurant from 3.00pm (sharp) – 5.00pm for the official launch of Maquette, hosted by Fred Schepisi. This is a free event, RSVP essential.

Phillip creates profound visual narratives that are not just his own story but both micro-narratives and meta-narratives of our time and place. He is known for his lithographic prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture. Doggett-Williams has throughout his artistic career not only given expression to deep personal experience but has also stepped beyond the confines of studio practice to pursue just causes and stage social/cultural events.
Regarded as one of Australia’s most successful and important sculptors, he is widely known for both his studio-based sculptures and major public and corporate commissions, working predominately within the language of abstraction.
Sculpture is an integral part of life at Montalto and a highlight of any visit to the estate.
Our 1km Sculpture Trail winds through our vines, along wooden boardwalks and through the wetlands and affords spectacular views of both the sculptures and the property along the way.
Many of our permanent sculptures were winners of the Montalto Sculpture Prize – among the most valuable private sculpture prizes in Australia.
