‘Pointing Girl’
Aluminium and toughened glass
280 x 120 x 60cm
MSP Prize Winner 2015
The work is a large-scale silhouette of a child figure constructed from aluminium and toughened plate glass.
The child is quietly pointing to something in the distance. She may also be gesturing towards her future or perhaps looking back to the past. She is at home in her landscape yet on a scale that deliberately removes her from any logical context.
“The figures in my work generally operate between metaphor and reality, with incongruous scale the dominant feature. This artwork borrows from our understanding of the real world to act as a marker or clue to a more specific or metaphorical question of environment/context and incongruity.” Matt Calvert
