POINTING GIRL - MATT CALVERT (2015)

Aluminium and toughened plate glass

280 x 120 x 60cm

Montalto Sculpture Prize Winner 2015

Pointing Girl is a large-scale silhouette of a child figure constructed from aluminium and toughened plate glass.

The child stands lightly on the lawn, quietly pointing toward the distance. She may appear to gesture toward her future or perhaps look back to the past, at once at home within the landscape yet scaled in a way that removes her from any logical context.

The translucent glass surface shifts with the light, allowing the figure to sit gently within the vineyard setting while retaining its distinctive presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Matt Calvert

Matt Calvert is an Australian artist recognised for transforming industrial and reclaimed materials into refined sculptural works.

Working predominantly with toughened glass and metal, he often draws from everyday motifs and childhood silhouettes, reframing them within outdoor environments.

Calvert’s practice sits between metaphor and reality, exploring the tension created when familiar forms are rendered at unexpected scales. His use of toughened glass introduces both strength and fragility, contributing to a visual language shaped by memory, materiality and subtle psychological cues.

In his own words, “The figures in my work generally operate between metaphor and reality, with incongruous scale the dominant feature. This artwork borrows from our understanding of the real world to act as a marker or clue to a more specific or metaphorical question of environment/context and incongruity.”

The sculpture reflects Calvert’s interest in scale, metaphor, and the emotional resonance of childhood silhouettes.
