EMBRACE - JON DIXON (2002)

Outdoor sculpture, permanent collection.

Set close to the path with the vines as a backdrop, Embrace presents a rounded, almost boulder-like form with smooth, carved recesses folding into one another. The sculpture reads as a single mass shaped by two interlocking forces, suggesting shelter, holding and quiet connection. Its soft contours and muted surface sit comfortably within the landscape, encouraging visitors to slow down and walk around the work, noticing how the curves tighten and open as they move.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jon Dixon

Jon Dixon is a contemporary Australian sculptor based in western Victoria. He is the founder and resident artist of Lyons Sculpture Park, a 15-acre bush property that he has steadily transformed into an evolving outdoor gallery of large-scale works, workshops and artist experiences.

Working primarily in outdoor sculpture, Dixon creates pieces that invite physical encounter and quiet reflection in the landscape. His practice often brings together organic forms and robust, weather-resistant materials, resulting in works that feel at once grounded, tactile and approachable.

Alongside his own sculpture, he makes hand-crafted gongs and runs creative programs that encourage visitors to spend time with art in nature. Dixon has been involved in a range of regional public art projects, including collaborative commissions along the Port Fairy Rail Trail in south-west Victoria, where sculpture is used to activate walking routes and connect communities with their local environment.

DIXON AT MONTALTO

Embrace joined the Montalto permanent collection in the early years of the Sculpture Trail and has become a quiet, contemplative marker along the walk. Positioned near the open lawns and vineyards, the work’s rounded mass and interlocking forms create a visual counterpoint to the linear rows of vines and the distant horizon.

In keeping with Dixon’s broader practice, the sculpture encourages an intimate, almost bodily response, inviting visitors to circle it slowly and read its curves as a gesture of holding or being held.

Within the context of the trail, Embrace speaks gently to one of Montalto’s central ideas: that art, landscape and human connection can sit together in a single, unified moment.
