M TWENTYFOUR - JAMES PARRETT (2016)

316 marine grade stainless steel

398 x 373 x 144cm

Acquired 2016

Montalto Sculpture Prize Winner 2016

M TwentyFour rises in a sweeping configuration of intersecting stainless steel arcs, its polished curves catching light as they tilt and counterbalance across open space.

Positioned on the lawn overlooking the estate, the sculpture presents shifting lines and tensions from every vantage point, creating an elegant interplay of movement, weight and stillness.

“Like all of my work, 'M-twentyfour' is inspired by the aesthetic potential of the circular form and what can be achieved through the dissection and reconfiguration of radial arcs. Specifically with this work, the focal point is the cross section between the two main arcs and how they can create tension and movement. I have also been exploring the ocean, the waves and the power and peace within them, and this is prevalent in 'M-twentyfour'. What I desire most of all in my practice is a gradual aesthetic evolution.” James Parrett

ABOUT THE ARTIST

James Parrett

James Parrett is an Australian sculptor celebrated for his long-running exploration of the circular form, using arcs, segments and radial geometry as the basis for refined, large-scale outdoor works. His sculptures balance engineered precision with expressive movement, resulting in pieces that feel at once grounded and fluid.

Parrett’s practice centres on dissecting and reconfiguring circles into new sculptural relationships, using curvature as both structure and gesture.

His works often generate visual tension through intersecting arcs, carefully resolved balancing points and the illusion of directional force.

Stainless steel, aluminium and other durable metals allow his forms to remain crisp and responsive to their surroundings, with light, shadow and landscape interacting as active elements.

Across his career, Parrett has continually pursued what he describes as a “gradual aesthetic evolution,” refining the balance between simplicity, dynamism and precision.

PARRETT AT MONTALTO

M TwentyFour was created and acquired in 2016, joining the collection as the winning work of that year’s Montalto Sculpture Prize.

The sculpture exemplifies Parrett’s signature method of dissecting circular forms and reassembling them into dynamic tension, with two main arcs crossing to generate a sense of rising energy and directional flow.

The work’s stainless steel surface responds beautifully to the shifting coastal light and the expansive vineyard setting, allowing the arcs to read as both sculptural lines and landscape markers.

Positioned prominently on the Sculpture Trail, the piece introduces a sense of lift and rhythm that aligns with Parrett’s interest in movement, waves and the meeting of power and calm.
