I GENERATION - LIZ WALKER & ADAM HOSS AYRES (2017)

Timber, steel, polymer paint

280 x 480 x 130cm

Acquired 2017

A simple wooden bench raised above the ground, inscribed with the quiet declaration “i am here,” sits within the landscape as both a pause point and a provocation. The work draws attention to its surroundings by encouraging visitors to stop, look outward, and reconnect with the natural environment. Its familiar form, subtly altered in scale and height, shifts the everyday act of sitting into an act of contemplation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Liz Walker

Liz Walker is an Australian multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing and public art. Often working with organic materials and tactile surfaces, she explores the emotional and environmental connections between people and place. Her work frequently reflects themes of stillness, presence, and the subtle narratives embedded within daily interactions with nature.

Walker’s practice engages deeply with landscape, materiality and human experience. She often uses timber and found natural elements, combining them with gentle shifts in scale or form to disrupt habitual ways of seeing. Her sculptures and installations encourage stillness and sensorial awareness, inviting viewers to engage more consciously with their environment.

SELECTED CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Extensive exhibition history across Australia, including outdoor sculpture exhibitions and major public commissions.

Recognised for her sensitive use of natural materials and environmentally engaged practice.

WALKER AT MONTALTO

i Generation extends Walker’s interest in presence and attention by transforming a familiar object into an unexpected reflective point within the landscape. Elevated above typical seating height, the bench repositions the viewer both physically and mentally, aligning with her broader exploration of perception, nature, and the act of noticing.

Adam Hoss Ayres

Adam Hoss Ayres is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice encompasses sculpture, installation, and conceptual design. His work often considers human behaviour, communication, and the tension between digital culture and lived experience. Ayres’ approach blends simplicity of form with conceptual clarity, encouraging reflection on how we occupy and interpret our surroundings.

Ayres explores the intersection of technology, communication, and physical space. Through pared-back forms and direct language, he reveals how contemporary tools intended to connect us can also distance us from each other and from the natural world. His work prompts viewers to reconsider their own presence, habits, and interactions.

SELECTED CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Participated in collaborative public art projects across Australia.

Known for concept-driven sculptural works that integrate text, form and environment.

Exhibited in outdoor and gallery contexts, with an emphasis on viewer engagement.

AYRES AT MONTALTO

Ayres’ collaboration on i Generation aligns with his ongoing interest in communication and the paradox of connectivity. The solitary bench, marked by the statement “i am here,” challenges the hyper-connected digital world by grounding the viewer in a single, unmediated moment within the Montalto landscape.

ARTWORK CONTEXT AT MONTALTO

i Generation responds to the contemporary condition in which “information, entertainment and social connections are all readily accessible through numerous apps, programs and mobile devices.” Yet, as the artists observe, “these seemingly remarkable advances in communication also have the ability to alienate users from each other and the extraordinary world around them.”

The work gently invites visitors to unplug, be still, and celebrate what is “beautiful and natural and real.” In doing so, the sculpture functions as both an object in the landscape and a quiet meditation on presence.
