Aluminium pipe
440 x 80 x 70cm
Acquired 2013
Montalto Sculpture Prize Winner 2013
Standing lightly on the earth, Abundance rises from a cluster of aluminium pipes that arc and tilt in long, refined lines.
The form appears both anchored and weightless, meeting the ground at a single point while extending upwards in tall, tapering gestures.
Its open structure allows the surrounding landscape to move through it, shifting the experience of the sculpture from every angle.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Frederick White
Frederick White is an Australian sculptor whose practice explores balance, movement and the relationship between form and the natural world.
Working primarily with metals, he creates structures that appear to hover between stability and lift, often using minimal points of contact with the ground.
White’s work frequently engages with ideas of energy flow, gravity and connection to the earth.
His sculptures use industrial materials such as aluminium to form organic, fluid shapes that seem to stretch, lean or rise as if animated by unseen forces.
By focusing on line, tension and lightness, he encourages viewers to consider the interplay between material strength and spatial delicacy.
His work often references natural phenomena such as wind currents, movement patterns or celestial arcs, all expressed through precise sculptural geometry.
SELECTED CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Winner, Montalto Sculpture Prize, 2013, for Abundance.
Exhibited widely across Australian sculpture exhibitions and outdoor art programs.
Known for large-scale linear sculptures using aluminium and steel.
Recognised for developing a distinctive language of weightless, ascending forms.
WHITE AT MONTALTO
Abundance entered the Montalto collection in 2013 after receiving the Montalto Sculpture Prize.
The work reflects White’s ongoing interest in energy, balance and the relationship between earth and sky.
Installed on the lawn near The Restaurant, the sculpture rises from a compact cluster of angled aluminium pipes into two long, narrow arcs that frame views of the surrounding vineyard.
Its single-point ground contact enhances the sense of lift, allowing the piece to sit lightly within the landscape while echoing the vertical rhythms of the vines and architecture.
