PILLAR - DAVID WATERS (2005)

Concrete

260 x 60 x 30cm

Acquired 2005

Winner, 2005 Montalto Sculpture Prize

Pillar rises as a slender vertical form marked by repeating corrugations that catch shifting light throughout the day.

Cast in concrete, the work recalls the familiar surface of corrugated iron water tanks, grounding it firmly in the Australian rural vernacular.

Set within the landscape at Montalto, the sculpture’s rhythm and gentle curvature echo the surrounding vineyard rows and undulating terrain.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

David Waters

David Waters is an Australian sculptor whose practice spans steel, timber, stone, concrete and mixed media. His work often explores structural rhythm, engineering principles and the tactile qualities of industrial materials, resulting in forms that feel both robust and contemplative.Waters’ sculpture is shaped by a deep interest in material behaviour, repetition and the interplay between industry and environment.

He frequently draws on rural Australian iconography, translating everyday utilitarian structures into refined sculptural language. Corrugation, flow and pattern appear throughout his practice, reflecting his ongoing fascination with water, movement and engineered form. His works are known for their clarity, balance and strong relationship to the landscapes in which they sit.

WATERS AT MONTALTO

Pillar was created in 2005 and awarded the Montalto Sculpture Prize that same year.

Its corrugated profile directly reflects Waters’ long-standing engagement with the surfaces and structures of water storage, translating these functional forms into a sculptural meditation on flow and containment.

Positioned overlooking the vines, the work aligns naturally with the vertical rhythm of the vineyard posts and the broader rural setting.

At Montalto, it stands as a quiet but commanding gesture that exemplifies Waters’ approach to material, engineering influence and landscape integration.
