WITNESS - CRAIG MACDONALD (2011)

Bronze

Acquired 2011

Witness presents a quiet, upright form with a gentle taper toward the ground, its smooth bronze surface carrying subtle tonal shifts that respond to changing light.

Positioned on the lawn overlooking the vines, its stillness heightens the sense of observation implied by its title.

The work invites visitors to slow their pace and notice the landscape from a place of calm presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Craig MacDonald

Craig MacDonald is known for his restrained sculptural language, often working with bronze to create forms that sit between figuration and abstraction. His works focus on presence, poise and an understated sense of humanity.

MacDonald’s practice is defined by a sensitivity to proportion, silhouette and balance, with a recurring interest in ambiguous, vessel-like forms that feel both familiar and anonymous. His sculptures often suggest the human figure without explicitly depicting it, allowing the viewer to project their own interpretations onto the work. He favours materials that develop character over time, enabling each piece to interact gently with the environment it inhabits.

MACDONALD AT MONTALTO

Witness entered the Montalto collection in 2011 and continues MacDonald’s interest in quiet, contemplative forms shaped by proportion and subtle curvature.

Positioned on the lawn near the deck, the sculpture holds space with understated confidence, its upright silhouette echoing the vertical rhythms of the surrounding buildings and landscape.

The work reflects the artist’s broader practice of creating gentle focal points that amplify the environment rather than competing with it.
