"2023 was a sublime vintage for Syrah. Blueberries, raspberries, and rhubarb meld with a medley of aromas including violets, liquorice, charcuterie together with a trove of spices. Fresh forest fruits are the foundation with Intensity and power the hallmark qualities. Generously fruited with beautifully ripe skin tannins, the palate is seamless giving the impression of reserved power."

Simon Black, Chief Winemaker.

REVIEWS

"I had lunch with the folks at Montalto earlier this week and I was too sheepish to admit that I’ve bought more Mornington shiraz/syrah over the years than I have Mornington pinot noir. Which isn’t a reflection on the quality of Mornington pinot noir; it’s just that when Mornington gets shiraz right, the region really gets it right, to my taste preferences. If I’d been really brave I would have said that Mornington shiraz/syrah is the more inherently complex drink.

They’ve got a great operation going on down there. Great crew. Wines, immaculate.

This is the kind of shiraz that could win the modern day Jimmy Watson. If you’re a follower of that award then you barely need to read on. It’s cool climate, it’s ripe, it’s strung with tannin and it cloaks its myriad flavours in just enough velvet to give it a luxurious feel. This wine is the goods. It tastes of black cherry and chicory, raspberry shortbread and black pepper, mescal and graphite, with menthol and smoked cedarwood as highlights. There’s a keen nuttiness to the finish especially, bitter in a good way, the perfect counterpoint to the wide sweep of peppers and herbs and fruits. It finishes long but the tannin management, so well finessed, is of particular note.” Score 95/100.

"Wild and alive and I love it. Introducing this fabulous Single Vineyard Syrah from Montalto which is the best release I have seen of this to date… Drinking well now, it will age gracefully should you have the patience to do so.”

WINEMAKING NOTES

Hand harvested fruit was meticulously sorted before destemming into 2T open fermenters. The grapes were allowed to soak before the onset of wild ferment. Following fermentation and a post ferment maceration period (21 days on skins in total), the wine was pressed and transferred to French oak puncheons (25% new) for natural malolactic fermentation, followed by 11 months maturation prior to bottling.
