'A generous yet elegant wine when released - it has aged gracefully retaining its complex mix of sweet fruit aromas such as plum and red cherry, balanced with more earthy and savoury notes delivering a deeply aromatic wine for its age. On the palate you’re met with a core of fresh red currant and cherry, combined with a savoury line almost smoked meat-like that delivers a well-balanced finish.' - Simon Black

At 55 metres above sea level, the Merricks site consistently delivers multi-layered wines with with concentration and an enticing array of fruit and savoury aromas. The 2014 vintage still showcases a delectable fruit profile, strongly supported by fragrances of saltbush and bay leaf. Generous on the palate with sensuous tannins and a long, spicy finish.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Small hand picking crates were used followed by destemming and an extended period of pre ferment soak (7 days) before wild fermentation. Always a generous and sensuous wine and this year it shows wonderful complexity and drive. 2 tonne open fermenters were used. Ferment temperatures were allowed to peak at 32 degrees Celsius. A post ferment maceration of 6 days followed before pressing. The wine was lightly racked to French oak Barriques (25% new, 25% one-year old, 50% two-year year) for natural malolactic fermentation and 11 months maturation.
