Hard yards of winter pruning well under way at Montalto, Red Hill

We have 118 acres of vineyard at our disposal here on the Mornington Peninsula, with 126,000 vines to prune each winter. A large task with which, for the first time this year, we included many from the Montalto hospitality team. Our immense thanks to our hospo team, front and back of the house, for contributing so much to ensure the job gets done this year.

There are many sub-regional differences and microclimates that add further interest to the Mornington
Peninsula style. At the northern end of the Peninsula or ‘Down The Hill’ there’s less rainfall and conditions are warmer and this produces a powerful and structured style of Pinot Noir. The areas around Red Hill and Main Ridge we refer to as ‘Up The Hill’ where it's higher, cooler and wetter and the soils are more fertile. By comparison, ‘Up The Hill’ produces a more delicately structured Pinot Noir with flavours in more of a red fruit and spice spectrum.

These are the differences that continue to excite us as we continue on our journey to understand our vineyards and help us produce Single Vineyard and Estate wines of such quality that we are recognised as a "Red Five Star" Halliday rated winery.
