MAY AT MONTALTO

The estate is looking absolutely magnificent – with the colours of autumn all around us and the warmth of the autumn sun on our backs. May is a busy month at Montalto – we hope you’ll join us!

“The last grapes of vintage 2023 were harvested during the first half of April. The final Pinot Noir from Red Hill and Shiraz from Tuerong arrived in the winery to be hand sorted, processed and fermented. It’s been a small but extended harvest with intense colour in our reds an early hallmark of the wines.”

Simon Black | Chief Winemaker

Wine-obsessed to the core, Justin arrived at Montalto on Melbourne Cup weekend in 2007. A moment etched in his mind as the start of an exciting new chapter of in-depth wine exploration far more immersive, exciting and hands on than his previous roles in front of house wine-focused hospitality.

At the helm of the warehouse, Justin’s role encompasses all aspects of inventory management, as well as ensuring Montalto customers from around Australia, and the world, receive their deliveries on time, every time – pending Australia Post’s cooperation and participation.

When he’s not carefully managing Montalto’s considerable wine stocks, Justin’s chasing career aces at disc golf (achieving 4 so far and counting), enjoying beach trips with his two sons or turning his attention to barbecuing something delicious on the backyard smoker for friends and family.

“Autumn weather really opens up the possibilities of wine! As the weather cools, I tend to enjoy richer and fuller whites with greater texture and body. Fresh, spicy reds also have their place as we head towards winter.”

Pinot Gris can sometimes be non-descript and forgettable wine. Simon and his team have turned that notion on its head. This Gris has intensity and focus, along with complexity and texture. A go-to with match with the subtle spices of a slow-cooked chicken korma.

Because our Chardonnays are so delicious in their youth, people may forget that expertly-crafted Chardonnay can age beautifully - developing toasty, marmalade qualities along the way. You couldn’t ask for a better wine to match a Sunday evening roast chicken dinner

I am an unabashed fan of cool-climate Syrah. Pure fruit, elegance and spice. This wine is a tried and tested companion to scotch fillets on the grill, or when enjoying a quiet night by the fire.

Our annual celebration of all the mums in our lives continues this Mother’s Day with lots of lovely ways to spend the day at Montalto.

Our beautiful all-weather marquee has arrived in The Piazza. From today, we’re excited to welcome a la carte bookings for groups of 2 - 9 guests in The Piazza throughout autumn and winter.
