A beautiful, fruit-driven layered wine with slow-poached pears and creamy nut butter. 9. Montalto Estate Shiraz 2015
The best-selling 2015 Montalto Estate Shiraz may have sold out, but the new vintage 2016 Estate Shiraz looks set to continue this cracking wine’s successful run, picking up a Gold Medal – 2017 Winewise Small Vigneron Awards, Gold Medal – 2017 Victorian Wine Show and 96 points from Campbell Mattinson. A complex array of liquorice, black olives, pepper, nutmeg and cloves on the nose combine with brooding black and blue fruits and spicy notes on the palate. There’s a gentle whole bunch fragrance and a nuance of dried herb adding to the complexity. Buy this before it sells out, too.
8. Montalto Pennon Hill Pinot Noir 2017
Montalto Pennon Hill Pinot Noir 2017 offers red and blue fruits including red currants, blueberry, sour cherry, cranberry and a hint of wild raspberry combine with florals, dried herb, spice, and earthy forest-floor qualities. On the palate, the generous, juicy red fruits of our Pennon Hill Pinot Noir 2017 meld with bramble and earth, whilst fresh acidity provides verve and a moreish drinkability to the wine.

7. Montalto Estate Chardonnay 2016
The first chardonnay appearance is made by the Montalto Estate Chardonnay 2016. This wine shows a collage of citrus flavours and aromas (lime, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit) supported by generous stone fruit, specifically white nectarine. The influence of French oak adds to the richness and mouthfeel of the wine in the form of hazelnuts and crème brulee. Tangy naturally acidity lends line and length to the palate.
6. Montalto Pennon Hill Tempranillo 2017
Continuing the Pennon Hill dominance of the list is the Montalto Pennon Hill Tempranillo 2017. Tempranillo is a cracking medium-bodied and diverse food-pairing wine with a wonderful flavour profile to match. Our 2017 vintage is deliciously savoury. Mineral and steely notes combine with mulberry, raspberry, cherry, blood plum and leaf litter together with faint nuances of tar and leather. There’s a rustic earthiness and a whisper of French oak in the background.
5. Montalto Pennon Hill Pinot Grigio 2017
The top five begins with the Montalto Pennon Hill Pinot Grigio 2017. Pure grigio scents of nashi pear and white florals combine with some mineral notes of slate and flint, together with some creamy lees aromas. On the palate, there’s freshness and a crunch of crisp fruit supported by a supple and textural framework.

4. Montalto Pennon Hill Chardonnay 2016
Coming in at fourth place is the Montalto Pennon Hill Chardonnay 2016. This wine offers up lemon and lime sherbet, nashi pear, ripe nectarine, chalk and slate notes combined with some roasted hazelnuts aromas. There’s some stuck match, brioche and gentle oak aromas just to round out the package.

3. Montalto Estate Pinot Noir 2016
Starting the top three (drum roll, please!) is the Estate Pinot Noir 2016, a Mornington Peninsula regional blend consisting of fruit from our single vineyard sites, a great expression of the local area. Low cropping levels, zero irrigation and hand-tended vines contribute to premium quality. The 2016 vintage is now sold out, but our 2017 vintage has already picked up three trophies (Winner of ‘Best in Show’ 2018 Decanter Asia Wine Awards, ‘Best Pinot Noir’ 2018 Winewise Small Vignerons Awards and ‘Best Pinot Noir’ 2018 Mornington Peninsula (MPVA) Wine Show) and a gold medal at the Boutique Wine Awards.
2. Montalto Pennon Hill Moscato 2017
Second place in popularity is the sweet Pennon Hill Moscato 2017. Montalto Moscato is a terrific wine for warmer weather. Aromas of rose petals and freshly crushed grapes, flavours of Turkish Delight and strawberries and a refreshing spritz that playfully surprises the palate, it’s bound to please those looking for a light and refreshing summer tipple.

And here we have it: Pennon Hill Pinot Noir 2016 is the best-selling Montalto wine in 2018, and for good reason. On the palate, juicy red fruits meld with bramble and earth, whilst fresh acidity provides verve and a moreish drinkability to the wine. French oak plays a lovely supportive role adding to the structure and flavour profile by way of mocha notes. An approachable Pinot Noir with excellent varietal and regional expression typical of the 2016 vintage.
