Deep crimson red in colour, the 2019 Tempranillo is a savory offering exhibiting blood plum fruit qualities together with oyster mushroom and faint nuances of chocolate, tar and leather. There’s a rustic earthiness with some mineral and ferrous notes adding further complexity.
On the palate, there’s plenty of juicy fruit to greet you and abundant rustic tannins to carry the fruit. The initial blast of fruit sweetness slowly subsides to be replaced with a long, plush and savory finish.
Simon Black, Winemaker
Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety hailing from the Rioja region in Spain. It is also grown in many other regions of Spain. The grapes for the 2019 Pennon Hill Tempranillo are sourced from a warmer vineyard site in Merricks North.
The fruit was hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed into 2T open fermenters, followed by a short cold maceration period. Fermentation was with yeast strain RC212. At the completion of primary fermentation, the grapes were pressed and the wine transferred to old oak French barriques for malo-lactic fermentation followed by 8 months maturation. | |
