Back during the 2014 vintage a small parcel of Shiraz caught the attention of our winemaking team.
The grapes from a two-acre old vine block, had been allocated for the Pennon Hill Shiraz blend.
Most of the fruit stayed exactly where intended, but the temptation to see just what this fruit could create in its own right ultimately proved irresistible.
Five barrels were set aside, and the result is just 115 cases of our first Montalto Estate Shiraz, a super-premium example of cool-climate Shiraz.
The Wine Front’s Campbell Mattinson scoring it 96 points.
“Montalto is a star of the Mornington Peninsula now. You’d be hard pressed to find a better performing producer,” he wrote in his review.
“This is a ripping wine. There’s no such thing as a no-brainer at $50 but this argues that there should be exceptions to the rule.
“Polish, flavour, structure, interest, class, length; look at it from any angle, and it holds a trump hand. Anise, black and white pepper, dry spices, black cherry, roasted nuts and smoked meats. You name it, it’s flashy with it. A rage of savoury loveliness.”
We trust you’ll enjoy this new addition to our range as much as the critics.
