Montalto Single Vineyard 'Merricks' Pinot Noir 2022

Mornington Peninsula

The Merricks Pinot Noir embodies boasts rich colour and impressive weight. It opens with sweet plum and dark cherry, initially veiling the more reserved notes of red currant and raspberry. This bold and generous wine also exhibits hints of charcuterie and a slightly more pronounced oak presence when compared to its Single Vineyard counterparts. The incorporation of whole bunch tempers the juiciness, creating a savory structure that complements the abundant fruit. A more tannin driven wine, where the acid plays a supporting role offering freshness rather than overt brightness.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Hand harvested grapes were sorted and destemmed into 2 tonne open fermenters.
Cold soaked for between 3 and 7 days prior to the onset of wild fermentation. 43% of
the blend underwent 2 weeks carbonic maceration before being destemmed, with
fermentation finishing on the skins. A seven-day post ferment maceration followed.
The wine was then pressed and lightly racked to French oak barriques (28.6% new) for
natural malolactic fermentation and 11 months maturation.
