Join three of Victoria’s most experienced growers: Julie Bennett of Montalto, Michelle Shanahan of Royal Mail Hotel and Jason Cotter from Tuerong Farm, on Friday August 10 as they discuss the joys and challenges of managing sustainable large-scale gardens, share practical planting and maintenance tips, and reflect on the future of heirloom species.
The evening will be moderated and includes three-courses using produce from Montalto estate with matched wines.
Please note that all courses feature wheat.
Meet the Growers
Julie Bennett, Montalto: Julie has been at Montalto for 16 years. She has a background in viticulture and a keen interest in organic farming. What started as a few small garden beds has now grown to 3 acres of mixed netted orchards, berry orchard and bio-intensively farmed produce beds providing fresh, organic produce to our restaurants with zero food miles.
Michelle Shanahan, Royal Mail Hotel: As the chief gardener at the renowned Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld she single-handedly oversees almost a hectare of organic edible gardens — touted as the largest of its kind in Australia — with a plant list of 700 species.
Jason Cotter, Tuerong Wheat: Jason Cotter is breaking with tradition and sowing 13 hectares of heritage wheat and ancient grains into paddocks adjacent to his vineyards. Jason is determined to bring wholesome, locally-produced flour to the Mornington Peninsula and beyond.
